This exhibition features the latest work from the Emerge Collective, based out of Fredericton, New Brunswick. A formidable force of seven artists, the Emerge Collective includes Larry Holder, Alison Green, Mark Cameron, Biff Mitchell, Tanya Thompson, Michael Doucet and Dawn Steeves.
For the last year, members of the Emerge Collective have been pondering the affects of music on their lives. There is no denying that music – certain artists, songs and lyrics in particular – have a hand in molding our personalities and life perspective.
This body of work illustrates the strong influence that music can have shaping our thoughts – in this case the artists explore how musical lyrics lend to their feelings about the impact of technology on society and the environment.
To start the project, each artist selected an excerpt from a song that has an environmental theme that created a strong image in their head – something they could translate visually. Their resulting works offer a concrete interpretation of their musical visions that provoke the audience to consider these same environmental issues.
The show features a variety of media, reflecting the wide range of materials and approaches of the current membership, including oil and acrylic paintings, sculpture, fibre art, photography and music.
