October Weekend of Workshops returns!

A full slate of workshops Friday, October 1 – Sunday, October 3 at the River Art Centre and Northern Carleton Civic Centre. Reduced workshop fees thanks to the generous support of the Carleton North Community Foundation.

Friday, October 1

Painting with Natural Dyes with Renata Britez

In this full-day course, we will be creating natural extracts from local plants and applying them onto cloth and paper. Some knowledge of natural dyes is encouraged. In this course, you will learn to create your own watercolours from local plants, the proper methods for achieving wash and lightfast results with natural dyes, and learn tips and tricks for using natural thickeners to enhance our designs. Throughout the day we will be outlining the whole process from plant to ink matter, and participants will work on various samples using paper and assorted fabrics.

Beginner Rughooking with Mary Grant
1-5 pm
Northern Carleton Civic Centre
$35

Certified Rug Hooking Instructor, Mary Grant, will present a half day course of traditional rug hooking techniques. Participants will work with strips of wool flannel and yarn on a burlap backing to produce a small 10 cm (4”) Mug Rug (coaster). Participants will need to bring a 6” round sturdy embroidery hoop, a small pair of sharp scissors such as embroidery scissors, and pen and paper for note taking. Participants will be provided with a supplies list.

Intermediate Rughooking with Mary Grant
9:30 am – 4 pm
Northern Carleton Civic Centre
$50

Certified Rug Hooking Instructor, Mary Grant, will present a 6 hour course using traditional rug hooking techniques to hook a stained glass mat. Participants will work with strips of wool flannel on a burlap backing to produce an oval 24 cm x 31 cm mat. It is unlikely that you will finish this project in a single day, but you will have the knowledge of how to complete it on your own. Some previous experience with rug hooking is needed, such as a beginner course. Participants will be provided with a supplies list.

Sashiko Workshop with Kate Ward
10 am – 5 pm
River Art Centre
Demystify sashiko stitching. Learn how to draw and stitch hitomezashi patterns which can be used to mend clothes and embellish fabrics. Participants will need to bring scissors and a ruler.

Carving Workshop Part 1 with James Buxton
9:30 am – 12 noon
River Art Centre
$50

This workshop will be held over two mornings, with a maximum of 4 participants, giving beginners lots of time to develop new skills and experienced carvers time to refine theirs. With James, RAC’s resident carver as your guide, you will create a little animal from start to finish over two mornings. Part 2 Sunday, October 3

Jewellery Workshop with Trudy Gallagher
