October 2021 Weekend of Workshops

at the Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery, River Art Centre and Northern Carleton Civic Centre.

Friday, October 1

Eco-Printing a Silk Scarf with Renata Britez
10 am – 5 pm
River Art Centre
Build an understanding of natural dyeing, surface design techniques and leave with a sample swatch and a finished silk scarf dyed with local colour.

Beginner Rug hooking with Mary Grant
1 – 5 pm
Northern Carleton Civic Centre
Certified Rug Hooking Instructor, Mary Grant, will present a half day course of traditional rug hooking techniques. Participants will work with strips of wool flannel and yarn on a burlap backing to produce a small 10 cm (4”) Mug Rug (coaster). Participants will need to bring a 6” round sturdy embroidery hoop, a small pair of sharp scissors such as embroidery scissors, and pen and paper for note taking. Participants will be provided with a supplies list.

Victorian Style Crazy Quilting Part 1 of 2 with Cat Candow
6 – 9 pm
River Art Centre
Learn how to piece together the foundation fabric by hand, and then explore a variety of historic and modern embroidery techniques to create a heavily embellished piece of crazy quilt which can be displayed as a wall hanging, pillow cover or be framed. (Previous sewing experience not necessary but good hand-eye coordination is helpful.)
Things to bring: reading glasses if you need them for close up detail work, scissors which can cut fabric, and (optional) any special pieces of fabric, trims, or buttons you would like to incorporate

Intermediate Rughooking with Mary Grant
9:30 am – 4 pm
Northern Carleton Civic Centre
Certified Rug Hooking Instructor, Mary Grant, will present a 6 hour course using traditional rug hooking techniques to hook a stained glass mat. Participants will work with strips of wool flannel on a burlap backing to produce an oval 24 cm x 31 cm mat. It is unlikely that you will finish this project in a single day, but you will have the knowledge of how to complete it on your own. Some previous experience with rug hooking is needed, such as a beginner course. Participants will be provided with a supplies list.

Carving Workshop Part 1 with James Buxton
9:30 am – 12 noon
River Art Centre
This workshop will be held over two mornings, with a maximum of 4 participants, giving beginners lots of time to develop new skills and experienced carvers time to refine theirs. With James, RAC’s resident carver as your guide, you will create a little animal from start to finish over two mornings. Part 2 Sunday, October 3

Jewellery Workshop with Trudy Gallagher
1 – 5 pm
Design and create your own unique bracelet using metal and beads with New Brunswick artist Trudy Gallagher.

Introduction to Ukulele with Peter McLaughlin (Beginners)
10-11:30 am
Second Wind Music Centre
This will be an introductory workshop for anyone who would like to play the ukulele.  No experience required.  We will explore holding the instrument, tuning, basic strumming and chording.  Singing is not required but nonetheless encouraged.  We will work both in small groups and as a whole group. Enrolment is limited to 10 people.
NOTE: You must bring your own instrument (some instruments are available for loan through the Andrew and Laura McCain Public Library).

Concert/Sing a Long with Peter and Friends

This show will feature Peter McLaughlin and some musical friends leading the audience in some well known favourites in sing a long style, along with some featured songs performed by Peter and the various other musicians for the audience’s pleasure. Lots of music and lots of fun for all ages.

Sunday, October 3

Large Scale Charcoal Drawing with Stephen Hutchings
1 pm – 4 pm
River Art Centre
Work with charcoal sticks and powder to make large-scale charcoal image based on landscape photographs. Participants may bring their own photos if they want.

Create a floral painting using acrylics and oils in a fun and relaxing setting.
