SUMMARY:Side Show: Colette Laliberte Feb 3 to Mar 10\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:Colette Laliberté –  Statement\nShedding Memories | Des hangars dans le temps\nThe drawings reference the rectangular\, decaying sheds found in Duntara\, a remote Newfoundland out port located on the coast at Bonavista Bay. The drawings\, with their ghostly feel and their softness of line\, are positioned strategically on the large sheets of drawing paper.  \n In Duntara’s better days\, it was an active fishing outport; now it consists of only twenty-four people\, down from forty-six in 2011. With the decline of the cod stocks\, few people are fishing. Abandoned\, windswept fishers’ sheds and century old houses  lay scattered around the bay. Most of them may be gone in a year or two. \nThese graphite pencil\, ink\, and gouache drawings were made during the course of a two-week residency at 2 Rooms Artist Residency. While the drawings may\, at first glance\, seem to be simply sophisticated doodles\, upon further observation a structure emerges that combines history and memory into a deft and intricate mosaic of lines. \nWeaving together the past\, the present and the future\, these sites belong to a soon-to-be-forgotten history as well as to a framework of places that are yet to become. \nColette Laliberté

SUMMARY:Side Show: Monique Bujold-Brown
DESCRIPTION:Using  the experimental and creative process of Raku Firing\, Monique’s ceramics are inspired by the landscapes of New Brunswick. The shapes and forms of the trees inspire the designs of her boxes while her interest in exploring fish is rooted in her childhood as a fisherman’s daughter on the Bay de Chaleurs. \nFrom the Artist \nHumble Evocative Raku\nWhy clay? How can I make it reflect who I am? How far can I go with it? We all have a need to speak\, to\nconvey how we view the world. How can I make this mud express who I am?\nWestern raku firing has become my favorite method of exploring my artistic voice. This style calls for\nexperimentation and creativity. And it involves playing with open flames which I love!\nIn the summer of 2004\, I took my first raku class at the Sunbury Shores Art and Nature Center in Saint\nAndrew NB with Peter Thomas. That was it! I was hooked from then on to this type of pottery. The\ncomplexity and yet simple\, impressive results of this genre is the best way I have of expressing my inner\npersona.\nMy incentive to go ahead with a body of work comes from a variety of inspiration and impulse. The idea\ncan be from admiring someone else’s work\, it can be from a sense of awe felt in front of beautiful\nscenery\, or it can be from a sense of inner peace\, of happiness and joy for whatever reason. All of these\ninfluences have played their part in this work of raku fired ceramic pieces.\nThe ‘eggs’ came from much experimentation after seeing Evelyne Shoenmann’s work\, a ceramist from\nSwitzerland. Her raku pieces are a subtle balance between obscurity and simplicity\, Wabi-Sabi\, a\nharmony I’m in constant torment of achieving.\nFor the Tree Boxes\, the beauty of our Maritime Provinces is my inspiration. The long drives taken to\nreach other parts in the Maritimes from my home in northern New Brunswick are the perfect occasion\nto replenish my inspiration. I find the pristine outlines of the magnificent pines and spruce the most\ncompelling of all.\nThe colored boxes result from a poem titled ‘Colors’ written for me by my husband. His verses led me to\ncreate different extruded boxes of different colors each with the corresponding verses written inside.\nThe fish theme is rooted in my happy childhood raised as a fisherman’s daughter on the Baie des\nChaleurs. This was a time when there was no concern for marine life’s present precarious state due to\nglobal warming and pollution. For me\, fishes impart a sense of vitality\, a zest for life\, a giddy sense of\nquirkiness. My fishes are my way of stirring awareness for the underwater realm.\nThe chawans\, Japanese tea bowl\, are part of my never ending quest to achieve this commanding humble\nform.\nWorking with mud is imparting the outcome the shape of my soul. \nMonique Bujold-Brown

SUMMARY:The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: It's Not The Age It's The Mileage
DESCRIPTION:With this popular exhibition The Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery welcomes the return of Carleton North favourites\, James Buxton\, Paul Buxton\, Phillip Harrington\, Shawn Taylor\, Roy Tibbits\, Kerry O’Toole while welcoming new artists Luc Cyr and Vicky Lentz\, Bruce Gray\, Craig Dow\, Ernest Clark and Stephen Hutchings  to The Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery. \n“The recurring themes in my designs are deceptive simplicity\, elegance and naturalness. When working with wood\, I typically start with a tree\, processing it into slabs. I follow my primary materials of wood and stone where they take me. My richest and most honest pieces are designed from\, and for\, the materials. Designs that use exquisite materials and maximize their strong visual assets: natural edge\, surface texture and negative space. People often ask if I built it that way\, or if it grew like that”.  Bruce Gray \nIn love for close to two decades\, the two artists Luc Cyr and Paula Lentz have combined their passion for the arts and work together forming an amazing artistic duo. “We quickly realized that we were a great team. Luc is the sculptor and Paula the painter. We combine our talents to create beautiful pieces of wood\, “they explained in concert. Luc Cyr has been sculpting and shaping wood ever since he was a young boy. As he himself explains\, he was born with a knife in his hands. “For the caricature sculptors I use spruce wood as a medium. I work with power tools for my creations. Paula then paints my pieces imaginatively using living colors that transform the work and give it a life”. Luc Cyr and Paula Lentz \nCharged with emotion\, the work is a reflective reaction to my everyday. Working in a non-representational mode\, the results are challenging\, inquisitive and colourful but never pretty. The need to express the visions in my mind’s eye is something that could not be ignored and eventually I settled upon acrylic and oils as being the best to express my vision. I continue to explore the corners of my cranium\, and strive to express my mind’s musings to my satisfaction”. SUMMARY:Pandemonium Diary: 50 Copperplate Etchings
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception Thursday January 12\, 2017 from 7-9pm \nPlease join the Gallery in welcoming our first exhibiting artist of the year\, Bob Morouney. \n“Pandemonium Diary is comprised of 50 copperplate etchings\, all visual metaphors. Buildings\, as metonym\, are the focus of chimerical juxtaposition wherein the disparate elements are reconciled only through insight. The images are narrative moments. The stories glimpsed are full of agency and refute the “common sense” that veils unquestioned assumptions. In all images the stories are simple and offer a choice of interpretations\, wherein lies their power to encourage a fresh look at the familiar.” \nA copperplate workshop will follow on Saturday January 14 from 9am-4pm\, cost $90. Look to our events page on facebook.com/mccainartgallery for more details. You can register by calling 392-6769 or emailing bryanne@mccainartgallery.com

SUMMARY:The Paintings of David McKay
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday September 29 (7-9PM)\nOn display September 29th – November 5\, 2016\nThis exhibition will feature work inspired by my native and beloved home province of New Brunswick as well as a few things inspired by recent trips to Scotland and Ireland … the land of my ancestors.  I work in the watercolour and egg tempera painting media and both media will be shown.  The images that I paint\, are usually created from a combination of memory and imagination.  Although my work is realistic in genre\, I always must feel an emotional connection with my subject matter and therefore\, the final result is not simply a direct reproduction of an image or place.\nDavid McKay is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) and is on the board of the Canada Council for the Arts.\nDavid has been painting professionally since 1972. During that time\, McKay has exhibited in galleries in Canada\, the USA and Europe including The National Gallery of Canada and The Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris\, France.\nDavid paints his native province of New Brunswick; its landscape\, people and buildings in the egg tempera and watercolour media.\nwww.davidmckayartist.com\nDavid’s work is included in the collections of:\nHis Royal Highness Prince Andrew\nThe University of New Brunswick\nThe Beaverbrook Art Gallery\nMount Allison University\nThe City of Fredericton\nIrving Oil Limited\nMcCain Foods Ltd.

SUMMARY:SPECTRA - Nancy Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, August 18th (7-9PM)\nOn display until September 24th\, 2016\nThree separate but connected groups of paintings pay homage to the power and behavior of colour. \nIn a series of seven watercolours\, I return to the traditional still-life genre\, where each painting focusses on a spectrum colour. The rich color of ripe fruit is enlivened by decorative motifs of dishes\, glassware and tablecloths. \nRevisiting the captured light and colour of Impressionism\, and reassessing the formal qualities of abstraction\, I have integrated sculptural elements in the large acrylic paintings to create shadows and tension on the painting’s surface. \nBridging representation in the watercolours and the complexity of the abstract paintings\, are seven relief structures\, each one charged with a spectrum colour\, varying in tone\, intensity and hue. Playing with the composition and the energy of an individual colour\, projected shapes and shadows reference symbolic and emotional qualities. \nThe experiences of a life lived are the source of my art while light and color have been my inspiration. Events and emotions are recalled\, ideas are revisited\, reassessed\, and transfigured into paint and the magic of spectra. \n

SUMMARY:Les B'old Hags
DESCRIPTION:Cover Image: “Because I’m Vintage…my cup runneth over” by Patricia Winans mixed media 12.7 x 25.4 cm \nOpening Reception Thursday\, July 7th\, 7-9PM\nOn display until Saturday\, August 13th\nLes B’old Hags are a renowned community of French and English female artists (ages 68 – 77) all harboring similar concerns  – “now that I am old what do I really think of the extra time I have been given? Do I love every minute of it or do I live in fear of death and the dying process?”\nHuge strides in medical science have given the aging population a new lease on life with an extra 10-20 years of physical health. However\, these Les Hags aren’t so sure this is ultimately for the best. They wonder “what is happening to our souls and spirits? Is the extra time only adding to our pain of watching loved ones die? Are we to marinate in boredom? Do we engender more fear of a painful\, undignified death? Will we fritter away the extra time in the same manner of our other years?\nDue to their long years of learning their art/craft\, Les B’old Hags have the technical skills and far reaching thought processes to tell their stories and it is these and other questions that the work in this unique group show will address.\nThis multi-media exhibition brings awareness to the aging and art connection and incorporates sculpture\, poetry\, fibre art\, music\, painting\, and performance.\n \n

SUMMARY:Earworm
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features the latest work from the Emerge Collective\, based out of Fredericton\, New Brunswick. A formidable force of seven artists\, the Emerge Collective includes Larry Holder\, Alison Green\, Mark Cameron\, Biff Mitchell\, Tanya Thompson\, Michael Doucet and Dawn Steeves.\nFor the last year\, members of the Emerge Collective have been pondering the affects of music on their lives. There is no denying that music – certain artists\, songs and lyrics in particular – have a hand in molding our personalities and life perspective.\nThis body of work illustrates the strong influence that music can have shaping our thoughts – in this case the artists explore how musical lyrics lend to their feelings about the impact of technology on society and the environment.\nTo start the project\, each artist selected an excerpt from a song that has an environmental theme that created a strong image in their head – something they could translate visually. Their resulting works offer a concrete interpretation of their musical visions that provoke the audience to consider these same environmental issues.\nThe show features a variety of media\, reflecting the wide range of materials and approaches of the current membership\, including oil and acrylic paintings\, sculpture\, fibre art\, photography and music.
