Deanna Musgrave

Deanna Musgrave is a Canadian painter and multimedia artist. Her work was recognized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 2007 when she was awarded the “Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Award” and continues into 2014 with the inclusion of her work into the group show “”Off the Grid: Abstract Painting in New Brunswick” opening in the spring. Musgrave’s work has also been seen at the 2008 International Toronto Art Fair, the New Brunswick Museum and the Confederation Centre for the Arts Gallery in Charlottetown.

From 2002-2012, her primary interest in painting was focused toward “visual music” or “intermedia synthesis.” While her work is still informed by the history of visual music, as well as, the processes she developed in the past 10 years while focusing on the genre, the subject of her work shifted in 2012.

Her most recent solo exhibition “Coronation” in 2013 presented her new work, which focuses toward the integration of multiple painterly references across history. In these works she seeks to create a confluent organism where abstract expressionism can become confluent with op art, romantic landscape or Dutch still life. The result is paintings, which create a dialogue as to the nature of opulence:

“Coronation taps not only the painterly elements of Musgrave’s classical masters, but, into the power and purpose of classical opulence. The result is a restrained excess increasingly unfamiliar in the 21st century.” ~ Mike Landry, Telegraph Journal’s Arts and Culture Editor
